Climate change is transforming agriculture, food systems, and cultural heritage. Soil degradation, pressure on food production, and environmental impacts on landscapes and historic materials are creating new challenges in the way we produce, preserve, and live.
SINFONIA brings together researchers from different fields to develop more sustainable and integrated responses to these challenges. The project combines sustainable agriculture, food innovation, and heritage preservation, connecting science, sustainability, and artistic practices.
An interdisciplinary approach
SINFONIA brings together researchers from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, integrating expertise in natural sciences, food engineering, health, social sciences, arts, and management.
The project is based on the idea that contemporary climate challenges cannot be understood through a single discipline. In this sense, SINFONIA creates a research space where science and art are not parallel domains, but complementary ways of thinking, interpreting, and engaging with reality.
An integrated vision
By bringing together agriculture, food, and cultural heritage, SINFONIA explores new ways of understanding sustainability, not only as a technical challenge, but as a space where science, culture, and creative practices intersect.
1. Agriculture and soil health
Development of more sustainable and resilient agricultural practices aimed at improving soil health and reducing environmental impacts.
2. Food innovation
Creation of plant-based food products aligned with challenges related to sustainability, health, and the transformation of food systems.
3. Cultural heritage and climate
Research on innovative strategies for heritage preservation in the context of climate change, combining material science, agro-industrial residues, and monitoring technologies.
Corsortium
The project is developed in collaboration between different research centres of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP), namely Centre for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry (CBQF), Research Centre for Science and Technology of the Arts (CITAR), Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Health (CIIS), and Research Centre in Management and Economics (CEGE).
Each unit contributes specific expertise, from life and food sciences to artistic practices, social sciences, and management, enabling a truly interdisciplinary approach to the challenges addressed.
