SINFONIA featured on the 90 Seconds of Science programme
SINFONIA Project Coordinator, Elisabete Pinto, recently took part in 90 Seconds of Science, Antena 1’s science communication programme, in a short interview dedicated to the project’s objectives and its contribution to addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
An integrated approach to tackling climate change
During the interview, Elisabete Pinto highlighted SINFONIA’s multidisciplinary nature and its aim to develop innovative solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change on agricultural systems, food production, and cultural heritage.
Among the research areas discussed was the development of more sustainable agricultural practices, including the promotion of crop rotation and the use of organic fertilisers, contributing to improved soil health and increased agricultural productivity.
Food innovation and the valorisation of regional resources
The interview also explored the work being carried out to develop new plant-based food products using ingredients characteristic of Northern Portugal.
Products currently under development include a plant-based egg analogue and a protein- and energy-rich nutritional supplement designed for older adults, addressing the interconnected challenges of sustainability, nutrition, and health.
Heritage, art and adaptation to climate change
Another topic highlighted was the impact of climate change on the conservation of cultural heritage. The project seeks to develop innovative solutions for the protection of artworks and monuments, including sustainable coatings capable of minimising the effects of ultraviolet radiation and other forms of environmental degradation.
At the same time, SINFONIA also explores the relationship between climate change, landscape, art, and society, promoting new approaches to understanding and responding to the environmental transformations currently underway.
Participation in 90 Seconds of Science provided yet another opportunity to showcase the work being carried out within the project and to reinforce the importance of interdisciplinary research in building sustainable solutions to the challenges of the future.
